Assessment of manual predominance in 150 patients to determine the effectiveness of plaque removal during dental brushing

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Gingiva inflammation is a clinical sign that 99 % of the world population had at some time in their life, this inflammation is due to presence of dental plaque. Objective. To demonstrate if handedness plays an important factor in plaque removal. The quantity of plaque between right handed patients and left handed patients was analyzed. Methods. Tooth brushing technique was taught to 150 patients, then a disclosing solution was applied, afterwards the patients were asked to brush their tooth, then plaque index was scored by probing, index plaque of Sillness and Löe was used to measure the quantity of plaque and which quadrant had more plaque. Results. Showed that right handed patients had more plaque on the right side. Conclusions. Hence there is a correlation between handedness and efficacy of toothbrushing in removing plaque.
