ABSTRACT
Objective: to characterize the psychological wellbeing of elderly people that live with large families and belong to the Medical Office 17-12 of the university polyclinic “Chiqui Gómez Lubián” in Santa Clara, Cuba. Methods: a descriptive-correlate study was carried out with a mixed design of concurrent triangulation (DITRIAC by its acronym in Spanish). The select sample coincides with the studied target population. The ¨Psychological Wellbeing Scale¨, the questionnaire ¨My Personal View¨ and half-structured interviews were applied. To process and analyze the information the descriptive statistics and tests without parameters were used, U de Mann-Whitney and Kruskall Wallis.
Results: a tendency to express ¨low¨ levels of psychological wellbeing is shown, however, toward the inside part of the proposed indicators ¨medium¨ levels are found on the dimensions of self-acceptance, positive relations, autonomy and personal growth. The results indicated the absence of meaningful differences of perceived psychological wellbeing in the variables of marital status, gender, occupation, education and amount of family members they live with.
Conclusions: the process of triangulation developed in the research allowed to demonstrate general tendencies about the object of study, but individualized expressions in the way in which elderly people experience psychological wellbeing were also found. It would be interesting to study psychological wellbeing in elderly people that do not live with large families and assess to what extent this variable has or has not an influence on the obtained results.
