ABSTRACT
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of the most prevalent conditions and coexistence with vascular
disease in other locations is common. Early diagnosis is important in order to improve the patient's
quality of life and reduce the risk of major secondary events. After initial clinical evaluation and physical
examination, patients with suspected PAD should be studied in a vascular laboratory using non-invasive
physiological tests such as ankle-brachial index (ABI), toe- brachial index (TBI), pole test, segmental
limb pressures, pulse volume recording, ABI with exercise / claudicometry and duplex ultrasound;
Which are relatively inexpensive, can be performed safely and provide prognostic information.
In relation to these tests, an algorithm has been proposed for the diagnosis of PAD in high-risk patients,
either symptomatic or asymptomatic, in the Departament of Angiology and Vascular Surgery of
the General Hospital of Mexico “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga”.
