ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine the pathologic venous reflux prevalence that exist among patients with obesity
diagnostic, at Lic. Adolfo Lopez Mateos Regional Hospital ISSSTE.
Material and methods. A case series prospective and observational study. Ultrasound mapping was
performed prospectively in 31 patients (62 extremities) to determine venous reflux, patterns of reflux,
besides differences between diameters in superficial and deep venous systems, at the Vascular Surgery
Department during March 2014 to March 2016.
Results. 31 obese patients took part on the study. Male patients 30.55%, Female patients 69.44%,
with previous diagnostic of venous insufficiency and obesity. Mean age 56.52 years (SD 10.42) Mean
Height 164.25cm (SD 8.10) Mean Weight 98.58kg (SD 15.51) mean BMI 36.40kg/m
2 (SD 3.74). Regarding
the presence of venous reflux, reported in 86.11% (31), within which the left inferior extremity
was more frequently affected. According to the classification, the reflux patterns found were; Type I: 2
extremities (3.22%), Type II: 4 extremities (6.45%), Type III: 6 extremities (9.67%), Type IV: 32 extremities
(51.61%), Type V: 16 extremities (25.8%), Type VI: 2 extremities (3.22%).
Conclusions. We can conclude the obesity is a risk factor that influences the development and progression
of venous insufficiency; therefore it is justified to make screening programs to identify this pathology
in early stages.
