ABSTRACT
Introduction: Overweight and obesity in the school population is a social problem that directly affects children aged 5-11. The National Health and Nutrition Survey conducted from 2011 to 2013, reveals that in the Republic of Ecuador, overweight and childhood obesity have risen to the level of Western countries. By order of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Ecuador, in the academic year 2014-2015, the hours of the subject of Physical Education increased from two to five hours per week. Objective: Determine if this political decision had a significant effect on the body weight of schoolchildren. Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted before and after treatment. Results: Although the total population significantly increased in weight, body mass index and percentile of the same, the decision was effective for the subjects who were overweight or obese. Conclusions: The political decisions were effective only for the population at most risk of suffering pathologies related to these weight bands and BMI.
