ABSTRACT
Introduction: Several researchers have shown that the intensity of plasma donation do not affect the immunoglobulins concentration. However, the authors of this research have seen fluctuations in the IgM concentration with a tendency to decrease in plasma donors.
Goals: To describe the behavior of the IgG & IgM concentration and their relationship with sociodemographic characteristic in donors.
Material and methods: Cross sectional study was conducted in the Provincial Blood Bank of Cienfuegos, from August 2013 to May 2016. By simple random selection, the sample was formed by 50 donors. The sociodemographic characteristic, sex, age and intensity of the donations are collected by a documentary review in the clinical records. In addition, the result of the immunoglobulin assays performed in the baseline and the periodic form in the selected individuals. The descriptive statistics, mean, minimum and maximum value, standard deviation for all measurements were calculated. To determine the differences between the group means, a hypothesis test was carried out using the nonparametric method.
Results: There were no differences between the initial measurement and the serial ones in the donations for IgG. However, in the case of IgM, there is a significant statistical reduction in these values, more notable in the donors with higher ages and who present lower values in the baseline measurement. The intensity of donations did not influence serum IgM levels.
Conclusions: According to the evidence found, it seems that regular plasma donation can influence the concentration of IgM.
