ABSTRACT
Analyse the changes in distribution, according to socio-economic factors, of facilities to practice recreational activities and sports at county level in Mexico . . Ecological study in which the units of observation were the municipalities of Mexico considering two periods: 1994-1995 and 1999-2000. The socio-economic information was obtained from the 1995 Population Census and the 2000 Census of Population and Housing. To measure the availability of facilities for physical activity the number of diverse establishments were analysed: a) private services in social, recreational and sport centres, b) private services of gymnastics and martial arts teaching and c) the sum of the preceding headings was called “sport facilities.” This information was obtained from the Economic Censuses of 1994 and 1999. For each municipality the number of establishments per 100 000 inhabitants was calculated. The three indicators of facilities availability (sport centres, gymnastic and martial arts schools and sport facilities) were correlated negatively with the percentage of illiterate population and the percentage of houses without electricity, running water and drainage (the Pearson coefficients varied from -0.09 to -0.49, p‹0.001). Another finding was that increasing inequities between municipalities, for example, amongst municipalities in the lowest quartile of housing without running water the average of sport facilities in 1994 was 8.31 establishments per 100 000 inhabitants, while in the highest quartile it was 3.08 establishments per 100 000 inhabitants (ratio of 2.70); for the year 1999 the averages were 11.48 and 3.78, respectively (ratio of 3.03). Amongst the municipalities in Mexico with worst socio-economic conditions there is less availability of facilities for the practice of recreational and sports activity, furthermore these inequities increased in the five-year period 1994-1999, which should be considered to elaborate policies to reduce the social inequality in health.
