ABSTRACT
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), rotavirus represents the major cause of serious illness in the world.
In Mexico, an incidence of Rotavirus infection of 4.5 infections per 100 children per month is reported. Objetive: To
report the series of cases of newborns with community acquisition of rotavirus gastroenteritis was made a prospective,
descriptive, observational study of children under 30 days in the period from November 1, 2008 to August 30, 2016, the
common feature among them was that they had a probable clinical picture of viral gastroenteritis and confirmation of
positive rotavirus in feces, by the technique of agglutination of particles in latex (rotaquick) were excluded those that had
another etiology.
Thirty-two cases were analyzed. Their average age was 23 days, 19 were male, 24 were eutrophic, exclusively fed with
breast milk 18, in mixed form 6. They had with vomiting 18, diarrhea 23, colic in 29, abdominal distension 31, in important
form 8, tenesmus 9, mild disappearance 8, moderate 22 and severe 2. 18 had leukocytosis, 31 had relative lymphocytosis.
They studied with isonatremia 24, hypernatremia 4, hyponatremia 4, hypokalemia 12 cases. The coprologo
showed PH of 5, fats from +++ to +++ crosses in 31 cases, all had Rotavirus positive (rotaquick). They were hydrated
orally with oral hydration therapy 28, with 2 treatment failures, hospitalized 6 cases with good evolution. Mortality was
0.3%.
The clinical picture of rotavirus in the newborn is different from that seen in infants. Abdominal distention and colic followed
by vomiting and diarrhea predominate. Feeding with breast milk is a protective factor of mortality.
