ABSTRACT
Background. Cerebrovascular disease is the third cause of death in the world and the incidence is about 730,000 cases per year in the U.S.
Objective. To describe a case series of stroke over a year at the Military Central Hospital (MCH).
Method. A descriptive-retrospective study was done through chart review of stroke patients Jan to December, 2002.
Results. A total of 163 patients were admitted with stroke to the Central Military Hospital, 84 (52%) were women and 79 (48%) were men. The distribution by types of stroke was: cerebral infarction 65%, cerebral hemorrhage and trascient ischemic atack 15% each, and subarachnoid hemorrhage 5%. The more affected hemisfere was the left (60%) in the cerebral infarction patients and the anterior circulation was the most affected (95%).
Conclusions. These features are similar to those reported in world literature. It is important to continue this line of research in order to confirm the consistency of these results.
