Background. The interest in treatment compliance theme in psychotic patients has been increasing due to the difficulties the health professionals are facing in dealing with patients who do not follow prescriptions that are recommended to them.
Objective. To evaluate the priority given by psychiatrists to treatment compliance of psychotic patients, as well as the importance given to other symptoms by order of severity.
Methods. A structured questionnaire that was randomly applied, in the period between April and July 2003, to 54 psychiatrists with professional practices in Salvador, Bahia. Literature from 1993 to 2003 was studied, including articles, summaries, through Medline computerized research. No conclusive data were found in our revision.
Results. In the questionnaire evaluation, 18.8% considered refusal to take medication as a main item and 37% thought the first two items as the most important; 78% considered agitation/aggressiveness as priority; 34.4% regarded suicide risk as the main item; 3.1% considered delusion and hallucination as priority.
Conclusion. Treatment compliance was not considered as priority by most of the psychiatrists, and the longer they have been active in practice, the less importance was given to compliance.
It is important to design a relationship between the professionals and the family in order to make a mutual commitment.
