Rehabilitation of the pelvic floor dysfunction: 10 years’ experience

ABSTRACT
Introduction. Pelvic floor dysfunction includes a group of muscular disturbances that close the inferior orifice of the pelvis. These patients are managed by a multi and inter-disciplinary group of specialists who do the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of them, with the aim of showing the Cuban experience in the rehabilitation of the pelvic floor dysfunction. Methods. Retrospective descriptive study started from the information contained in clinical histories of pelvic floor during the period from January 2007 - December 2016. The variables studied were: age, sex, dysfunction of the pelvic floor, and evolution; also analyzing the results from the conventional statistical tests. The sample was made up of 756 patients, 590 (78 %) female, with an average age of 53 years, and 166 male patients with an average age of 45 years. Results: Patients with associated dysfunctions (29,7 %), urinary incontinence (18,6 %), and fecal incontinence (15,3 %) predominated in the study, out of whom the 60,4 % (457)did rehabilitation treatment, the 85, 4 % had a satisfactory evolution, the (24,5 %)were cured, and the (60,8%) showed an improvement. Conclusions. The tributary patients of receiving rehabilitation treatment resolve or get better their pelvic floor dysfunction and quality of life with the therapeutic techniques of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
