ABSTRACT
Introduction: ABO erythrocyte antigens have been associated with various diseases and human longevity.
Objectives: to identify possible specific allelic association between longevity and the locus of the ABO antigenic system, considering ethnic groups.
Methodology: a control case study was conducted, aimed at searching for possible allelic association of the longevity phenotype to the locus alleles of the ABO system in 280 elders of Villa Clara. Several hypotheses were tested, assuming the association of the longevity phenotype with the allele A, B or both. We evaluated whether any of the alleles was more frequent among elders than in blood donors who were used as control. The association studies were conducted by strata depending on ethnic groups.
Results: allele A was more frequent among elders than in blood donors in the non- white stratum. In allelic association studies, in non-white elders, for dominance models and favoring effect, the cross-product ratio for allele A was greater than unity, with no statistical significance. In the model that tested the unfavorable effect, non-B alleles were associated with longevity (p = 0.02). In the sample that included white people, the most frequent allele in the elders was the B.
Conclusions: allelic association of non-B alleles in elders of the non-white stratum was found.
