ABSTRACT
Introduction: some oligoelements are considered important in the pathophysiology of diseases that emerge in postmenopausal women; several of them have been associated with vascular hyperreactivity through endothelial dysfunction.
Objective: to compare serum concentrations of the oligoelements (iron, copper and zinc), as well as the pressure response to isometric exercise in fertile and postmenopausal women.
Methods: the sample consisted of 125 healthy women, aged between 18 and 60 years: 101 in fertile age and 24 postmenopausal women from Santa Clara municipality. Blood pressure was measured in all women at rest and during the isometric test of the sustained weight. Serum concentrations of trace elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry.
Results: postmenopausal women were characterized by a higher degree of vascular reactivity with significantly higher systolic, diastolic and mean pressures during the isometric test. The values of the oligoelements that were obtained correspond to those reported for normal adults. Zinc had significant differences between the two groups, with lower values in postmenopausal women, whereas iron presented higher figures in this group.
