ABSTRACT
Objective: to identify the existent relation between birth weight and obesity in children and adolescents. Methods: an observational descriptive study of all children and adolescents aged 10-15 years who came to the Endocrinology consultation at “José Luis Miranda” University Pediatric Hospital suffering from exogenous obesity was carried out during January and December, 2016. Results: 60.7 % of the total was male and 78.7 % had white skin. The 67.3 % were classified as normal weight at birth; low weight and overweight showed similar results, with 16 % and 16.7 %, respectively. The 68 % had severe obesity, 81.3 % abdominal obesity and 21.3 % had arterial hypertension without any statistical relation to their birth weight. Conclusions: cardiometabolic risk factors as severe obesity, arterial hypertension and abdominal obesity were frequent findings, but in this study, they did not show association with birth weight.REFERENCES
