ABSTRACT
Introduction: superior semicircular canal dehiscence is an inner ear abnormality characterized by the partial absence of the bony covering of this canal. In normal conditions, there are just two inner ear windows: oval and round, both elastically closed; so when there is a superior semicircular canal dehiscence, a "third window" exists in the labyrinth changing the physiology of the inner ear. Objective: to describe superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome as a form of presentation of peripheral vestibulopathy. Method: review and discussion of the medical literature. Conclusion: nowadays, there are discrepancies on the real prevalence of this syndrome despite the solution of the diagnostic imaging methods.
