ABSTRACT
Background: The sudden sensorineural hearing loss, which usually becomes self-limiting, can cause disability for a while and can leave sequels if is not treated properly. Management with systemic steroids increases the recovery of hearing and also reduces the time of the hearing loss; however, there is still a group of patients that doesn’t improve. Objective: To assess the hearing recovery in adult patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss treated with systemic steroids and the combination of ginkgo biloba with systemic steroids.
Material and Method: An open non-randomized controlled clinical trial was performed from January 2009 to December 2011 in patients over 20 years of age with the diagnosis of sudden sensorineural hearing loss without previous treatment. We divided the patients into two groups: one experimental group receiving combined treatment with steroids plus ginkgo biloba (120mg/day) during four weeks, and a second control group treated only with steroids (prednisone 60mg/day, followed by a reduction scheme). Both groups were evaluated by tonal audiometries pre-treatment and after four weeks of treatment.
Results: We found a hearing recovery of 30dB at the fourth week, in 75% in the experimental group treated with combined therapy and in 66% in the control group treated only with steroids.
Conclusion: There is no improvement in hearing with the addition of ginkgo biloba to the steroid treatment for the management of sudden hearing loss.
