ABSTRACT
Amebic liver abscess remains to be a health problem
especially in the developing countries. Despite this, the
extra-intestinal complications of amebiasis are becoming
far less frequent. Th e case of a female patient of 17 months
of age was presented, through which the diagnosis
of amebic liver abscess was established. Upon her
admission the patient developed high fever, leukocytosis,
transaminasemia, hepatomegaly and hepatalgia. Th e
determination of positive “fresh amoeba” in stool samples,
IgG antibodies and the imaging characteristics through an
ultrasound, including the excellent response to treatment
with metronidazole, confirmed the suspected diagnosis.
Th ree hepatic liver abscesses were detected predominantly
in the left hepatic lobe and due to the dimensions thereof,
the possibility of evacuating the abscesses through a
surgical approach was contemplated. However, given
the favorable clinical outcome and responses, we may
conclude that drug treatment is suffi cient as a cure, as
reported in the world literature.
