ABSTRACT
industry worldwide. In recent years, the concepts
of “cosmeceutical” products have generated great
interest in the public sector. However, there is a lack of
regulations on the term cosmeceutical, since neither
the Federal Commission for Protection Against
Health Risks (COFEPRIS) of Mexico, Food and
Drug Administration of U.S.A. (FDA) or Cosmetics
Europe (formerly the Association of Personal Care
Europe-COLIPA) recognize this term in its legal
framework. Mexico has become the leading exporter
of cosmetics in Latin America. In Mexico, the
Ministry of Health is responsible for the regulation,
control and promotion of health, regarding cosmetic
products through COFEPRIS; i.e. the Ministry of
Health is responsible ensuring that the control of the
process, use, maintenance and disposal of cosmetics
is sanitary. The Ministry of Health also establishes the
minimum specifications to be met by establishments
engaged in the production thereof. Which is why
this review focuses on: defining what are cosmetics
and cosmeceuticals, some examples of cosmeceutical
agents, an overview of the regulatory framework for
cosmetic products in Mexico and some innovations
in this sector.
