ABSTRACT
Ear reconstruction is a challenge for plastic surgeons. Its elaboration requires valuable resources from the patients, which is why it should not be done sporadically nor without previous training in vegetable and animal models. Sixty nine ear reconstruction cases from March 2002 to February 2005 are presented: 47 (68%) male and 22 (31.8%) female. The age average was 16.2 years old. 49.2% were between 8 and 12 years old. 53.6% had microtia on their right side, 33.3% on their left and 13% were bilateral. 86.5% were congenital in origin. The procedures presented are 67 modified Nagata’s technique with costal cartilage and two reconstructions with contralateral conchal fibrocartilage, 38 ear elevation with small rib cartilage, and total skin graft from the groin; 16 temporoparietal fascia flap , with a semilunar rib cartilage graft and partial skin graft from the scalp. Fifty minor procedures with local anesthesia were carried out to resect remnant areas. There were 23 % minor complications and 6.5% major complications.
