Optimize academic performance in Dentistry students from Order 18

ABSTRACT
Background: the quality of the Dentistry graduate is a challenge for medical education, regardless the way they enter university. Objective: to design a didactic strategy to optimize the academic performance of Dentistry students coming from Order 18 of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces. Methods: a development qualitative research was carried out in the Dentistry Faculty of Camagüey University of Medical Sciences from September 2015 to July 2016. Methods of the theoretical level were used: analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction and empirical ones: documentary review, survey, group interview and critical opinion workshops and collective construction. Results: the incidence of students who didn’t pass final exams and the need to offer them a differentiated attention were identified, they recognized as limiting factors: time out of studies, difference of age with respect to their classmates, and family and personal responsibilities; the teachers add demotivation for the career, particular characteristics of the previous curricula, absences to planned review classes and misuse of the assistant students to study; no specific activities were specified to minimize or solve the difficulties, that’s why a didactic strategy was designed, which was assessed by specialists' criteria. Conclusions: it was a practical tool to optimize the academic performance of the students and was assessed as pertinent and feasible to be applied in the first two years of the career by the specialists consulted.REFERENCES
