ABSTRACT
The drowning syndrome is defined as the process of experiencing respiratory impairment from submersion or immersion in a liquid, mainly characterized to affect previously healthy young people.
The specific etiology is unknown, but it is associated to alcohol, drugs and head trauma. The general incidence in Mexico in 2000 was 2.692 cases and only five happened inside a pool, associated mainly to negligence. The pathophysiology depends on the duration of the submersion, amount and characteristics of aspirated liquid and severity of the hypoxemia. The treatment is based on the reestablishment of the ventilation, correction of the hypoxemia and handling of pulmonary edema.
