ABSTRACT
Giant congenital melanocytic nevi are uncommon,
research reports that they are present in 1 of 250,000 –
500,000 newborns, and the risk of potential malignization
increases according to its size. Th e importance of this
pathology resides in the aesthetic, surgical and emotional
points of view which can aff ect both the patient and his/
her family, besides the possible association with other
malformations in the central nervous system and also,
the risk of being the origin of a malignant melanoma.
Th e case presented is a male newborn with the presence
of a large Giant Congenital Melanocytic Nevus covering
the upper and lower back, anterior thorax, and the
abdomen, forming a vestlike formation. We reviewed
clinical aspects, diagnosis and the therapeutic approach
for Giant Congenital Melanocytic Nevi in children.
