ABSTRACT
Introduction: living with a chronic and incurable disease such as sickle cell disease, in many cases it brings about an increase in the developmental crisis experienced by adolescents, as well as changes in their self-assessment. It is necessary to work and offer psychological support to the adolescents and their family members for the transit through this stage. The objective of this research was to characterize the self - assessment in adolescents diagnosed with sickle cell disease, attended at Pepe Portilla Provincial Pediatric Hospital, during the period from March 2015 to December 2016. Method: an experimental, transactional, descriptive study was carried out with a qualitative design. From a target group of 20 pediatric patients with sickle cell disease, 14 were chosen, which responded to the selectivity of not being in periods of crisis due to illness during the time of the investigation. Psychological evaluation instruments were used as research methods. Results: usually described as dependent, introverted, solitary, and insecure, considered by them to be unfortunate, and undergoing strong experiences of jealousy and possessiveness, presenting an inadequate assessment because most of them are undervalued. Discussion: self-rated content focuses primarily on areas such as health, interpersonal relationships, family and school. The regulatory function of self-assessment focuses on quality of life and study. Adequacy levels are described in all subjects studied as inappropriate.
