ABSTRACT
Introduction: does a recent report of the OMS about the global load of the illness indicate that the knee osteoarthritis this next of being the fourth more important cause of incapacity in women and the octave in males, being immense the annual costs attributed to such pathology.
Objective: This review aims to report the effectiveness of manual therapy interventions alone and/or combined with therapeutic exercise for the improvement of chronic knee pain.
Methods: we made a bibliographic review using main databases between January and March of 2016. Randomized controlled trials assessing osteoarthritis of the knee, including as treatments manual therapy and therapeutic physical exercise.
A reviewer selected the studies; on the other hand, the analysis of the methodological quality was carried out by two independent reviewers.
Results: four studies were identified with 498 participants who used manual therapy and / or therapeutic exercise alone or in combination with other interventions.
Conclusion: Both interventions demonstrated effectiveness in treating chronic pain from a combined approach. However, further research is needed because there were no significant differences.
