ABSTRACT
Introduction: blood hypertension at pediatric ages has been underestimated by some medical professionals and blood pressure is not frequently taken in a systematic way. Once diagnosed, there are doubts about the type of treatment to be given to these children, the drug doses and the possible adverse reactions. Objective: to update the criteria on the treatment of blood hypertension in pediatrics in order to contribute to the preparation of health professionals in this topic. Methods: Scielo, Medic Latina, Medline Complete, Academic Search Premier, Elsevier and Cochrane Library databases in Spanish, Portuguese and English were reviewed; the reviewed literature was analyzed and summarized. Development: changes in the lifestyle as a significant part of the hypertension treatment in these children, mainly the essential hypertension, were detailed. The criteria for the onset of the drug treatment and the use of different antihypertensives, according to physiopathological mechanisms, associated diseases or special situations, and the goals to be attained for the control of blood pressure were also explained. Conclusions: the treatment of blood hypertension should be integrated and customized, depending on the characteristics of the patients, and taking into account all the risk factors and/or the associated diseases. The blood pressure cannot be separately treated, because if other factors are not modified, the blood pressure management turns difficult.
