ABSTRACT
Meconium pseudocyst is an intestinal dilation of meconial content
with smooth muscle in the wall connecting it to the proximal loop
causing intestinal blockage. Prenatal ultrasound and postnatal image
studies permit an accurate differential diagnosis. Histopathological
confirmation is fundamental, by showing smooth muscle in the cyst
wall.
Clinical case: neonate with prenatal ultrasound (37 weeks’
gestation) with abdominal cystic image. At birth, globose abdomen,
without evacuations; meconium pseudocyst was diagnosed by x-ray,
ultrasound, and abdominal tomography. The aim of this publication is
to differentiate between meconium pseudocyst and cystic meconium
peritonitis. Timely surgery improves the prognosis.
