ABSTRACT
Background: renal cell carcinoma accounts for 2% of all cancers of the urinary system. From a histopathological standpoint, the most common type is clear cell carcinoma, which accounts for 85%. The majority of renal tumors are diagnosed by means of abdominal echography or tomography. Objective: describe the characteristics of renal cell carcinoma by computerized axial tomography, and the histological findings.
Method: 100 patients with diagnosis of renal tumor were evaluated and the specific characteristics of renal tumors were determined by tomography; confirmation was by histopathological reporting.
Results: 56% of the patients were males; the age range was 25 to 89 years. We found lesions of solid (77%) and cystic (21%) appearance, 93% reinforced by administration of contrast medium, in 26% there was involvement of vascular structures and in 34% invasion at a distance, with calcification in 35%. Of the clinical aspects evaluated, lumbar pain was reported in 41% of the cases and hematuria in 51%.
Conclusion: computerized tomography of the abdomen with contrast is the most accurate method of diagnostic confirmation and staging available for diagnosis of renal cancer.
