ABSTRACT
Glycobiology comprises the study of the molecular structure and biological function
of free polysaccharides present in glycoproteins, glycolipids and proteoglycans, as
well as proteins that specifically interact with polysaccharides (including lectins,
glycosyltransferases and glycosides) and their causal development of pathologies,
diagnosis and therapy.
There has been much interest recently in the study of glycans and glycoforms,
such as proteins and peptides that have glycans attached to them. The analysis of
glycans also known as carbohydrates, (sometimes simply sugars)) is of increasing
importance for science as diverse as pharmaceutical drug development, cancer
research, stem cell research and the development of biofuels. Scientists used to
consider carbohydrates as foods that were not much needed by the body, but now,
because of glycobiology, they have discovered some surprising facts about monosaccharide
carbohydrates, known as glyconutrients.
They are 8 essential monosaccharides necessary for our health and are known
as glyconutrients. They are: mannose, glucose, galactose, xylose, fucose, N-acetylglucosamine,
N-acetyl-neuraminic acid and N-acetylgalactosamine.
