ABSTRACT
Introduction: Insanity is frequently thought about based on the logic of biomedical thinking and the prevail of reason over sensibility and affection. Among the indigenous people, health is determined by the way in which the human being is part of nature. The expected individual, social and spiritual behavior reunites this integration and the disease is the phenomenon negating it, caused by the action of evil spirits of nature or by human action. Objective: Propose a reflection regarding the indigenous conceptions about mental diseases and their manifestations. Methods: Reflexive study about the authors' experiences with indigenous populations, research and reading of books, monographs, journal articles in the databases LILACAS and SciELO, and consultation of the national and international regulations, between September and November of 2015. Conclusions: It is necessary, for health care practices, to broaden the focus of professional knowledge about health and disease beyond the biological dimensions, considering the different values and concepts that are universals in other Western societies.
