ABSTRACT

Introduction: The attention Health Comprehensive National Policy in males was created to direct health actions and reduce the high male death mortality rate. This brings reflection about masculinity and gender conceptions. Objectives: Identify the causes that make the males to develop resistance to health care, and whether the gender conceptions bring obstacles to health services demand. Methods: Descriptive research with a qualitative approach made with the residents registered in the area of a health basic unit in the Guanambi Municipality, Bahia. 25 males at ages 20.89 years were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Results: The men are difficult regarding their own health care due to the feelings of fear, embarrassment, and behaviors such as impatience, lack of care, life priorities, and the matters related with the form of organization of health services. We observed that the gender-related factors have a strong influence, and sometimes as an obstacle. Conclusions: We perceived the need for considering better treat the men's health policy regarding the determining factors relate with the process health-disease in that group and for the professional to give attention to their singularities. This research has yielded subsidies for new conversations aiming at providing a means for understanding and adopting strategies channeling the effective application of this policy.
