Mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width levels in acute appendicitis

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Acute appendicitis is a common surgical pathology, its diagnosis is a clinical challenge, and its timely treatment prevents fatal complications, recent use of mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) can help in the diagnosis of this entity.
Objectives: To determine if MPV and PDW have any relation with the diagnosis of acute appendicitis, when compared to their healthy control.
Material and methods: Observational, retrospective study, from June to October 2016, in patients with acute appendicitis confirmed by histopathology and their healthy control with patients admitted for elective hernioplasty. Values of leukocytes, neutrophils, MPV and PDW were used for their analysis. Statistical analysis was performed with Student’s T for age and numbers of: leukocytes, net neutrophil count, platelets, MPV, PDW. In the appendicitis group Pearson correlation was performed with: Alvarado scale and appendicitis phase with respect to leukocytes, neutrophils, MPV and PDW.
Results: Statistically significant differences were found in leukocytes, neutrophils, MPV and PDW between the two groups. Negative correlation was found between MPV and the degree of appendicitis; as well as positive correlation between PDW and degree of appendicitis.
Conclusions: Despite the results, more studies are needed to establish the relationship between PDW and MPV with appendicitis.
