ABSTRACT
Kerion Celsi is a scalp tinea with a severe inflammatory response
with pustulae and abscesses.
Microsporum canis and
Trichophyton
mentagrophytes, are the most common causal agents and if untreated
cicatricial alopecia is frequent observed. A 4-year-old
male patient from San Carlos, Alajuela, Costa Rica, presented
with a one month history of multiple seropurulent, painful and
pruriginous lesions in the head. No fungal structures were observed
in the koh study, and in Sabouraud dextose Agar culture
with cycloheximide and chloramphenicol,
Trichophyton mentragrophytes
was isolated, confirming the diagnosis of Kerion Celsi.
Successful treatment with griseofulvin 20mg/kg/day and prednisone
0.5 mg/kg/day were given for six weeks.
