Status of oral health related to diabetes mellitus in elderly adults

ABSTRACT
Introduction: knowledge about health status of elderly adults has a great value for the assistance of this population group.Objective: to determine the status of oral health related to the presence of diabetes mellitus in elderly adults.
Methods: a transversal descriptive study was carried out in patients of 60 years old and more. The population was constituted by 552 elders. The studied variables were age, sex, presence of de diabetes mellitus, dental caries, chronic periodontal inflammatory diseases, lesions in the mucosa, oral hygiene of the prostheses, smoking habit and ingestion of alcohol.
Results: the presence of dental caries is high, 53,6 %, it is higher in diabetics with a 68,2in diabetic patients severe periodontitis prevailed with a 45,6%. The most frequent lesions of the mucosa were candidiasis with a 11,2% in diabetics and sub prosthesis stomatitis, 18,4%, in non-diabetic patients . The risk factors that prevailed were deficient hygienic habits with a 77, 6 % in diabetics and 76,2% in non-diabetics.
Conclusions: the 60-74 age group prevailed and the male sex, dental caries and periodontitis were the most frequent diseases, with highest expression in diabetics. The presence of sub prosthesis stomatitis prevailed; and oral candidiasis in diabetic elderly adults.
