ABSTRACT
Background: Childhood blindness has an impact on children, as it affects their development, education and future life; so it is necessary the early diagnosis of its causes, within which is the retinopathy of prematurity. In the Sancti Spíritus province, an active disease survey was carried out to detect neonates with risk factors for their disease, to diagnose them and treat them on time. Objective: To propose a logistic regression model that predicts the probability of developing retinopathy of prematurity in preterm neonates based on their associated risk factors. Methodology: An observational, analytical study was performed on 751 preterm children who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A descriptive and inferential analysis, with a classification tree and then logistic regression was used. Results: Risk factors associated with 82 patients diagnosed were exposed, predictors of disease (mechanical ventilation, low gestational age and oxygen) by use of a classification tree identified. From these, a statistical prognostic model was presented to predict the disease. Conclusions: The proposal allows, in relation to a premature neonate, to predict the probability of retinopathy of prematurity.REFERENCES
