ABSTRACT

We present the case of a male patient 21 years of age who, following embolization with N-2-butyl cyanoacrylate (Histoacryl^®) of an extracranial (scalp) left parieto-occipital arteriovenous malformation, presented sudden respiratory difficulty, documenting microembolism of centrilobular pulmonary arteries as an immediate complication associated with the procedure by means of radiological exploration. The use of this material in different procedures has proved to be safe and successful; however, mild complications have been reported such as nausea, vomiting, bleeding, ulcers, and infection. Occasionally, it may be accidentally deposited in nearby blood vessels, but severe complications like migration of the material to the pulmonary bloodstream are fairly uncommon.
