ABSTRACT
Introduction: thyroid nodules are one of the most common
endocrine pathologies. They are identified by ultrasonography in 19-
76% of the general population. This prevalence varies depending on
genetic, racial, dietary, and lifestyle factors. In Mexico, few studies
have been conducted to determine this incidence.
Purpose: determine the incidence of thyroid nodules incidentally in
women residents of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.
Material and Methods: we conducted a transverse, descriptive,
observational study of women residents of the state of Chihuahua who
had mammograms taken in the Intramagen diagnostic clinic in the
period April 2015 to September 2016. In addition to the mammogram,
the subjects underwent a thyroidal ultrasonography.
Results: two hundred and twenty-six (226) women with average
age of 54 years (range 35 to 82) were evaluated. Thyroidal ultrasonography
detected nodules in 140, 62% of the sample studied. It was
observed that age was higher in patients with diagnosis of thyroid
nodules (p ‹ 0.01).
Conclusion: the incidence of thyroid nodules in women from the
state of Chihuahua, Mexico, is high, similar to that reported in the
international specialized literature; we also found that the incidence
of thyroid nodules increases with age.
