ABSTRACT
Introduction: skills, as forms in which the subject assimilates the activity and perfects it, should become a focus of special attention for the specialists in ophthalmology involved in the task of teaching and education. Objective: to characterize theoretical tendencies in the conceptualization of skills with a view to their application in the didactics of ophthalmology. Method: the historical-logical method was used, including analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction procedures. The documentary review was used as an empirical method. Results: skills have been considered by some authors as habits; by others as abilities; and by a broader group such as formations, structures, or psychological particulars related to actions and operations, requiring conscious control, are manifested both in theory and in practice, are subordinated to an end, and formed in activities which allow the problem-solving and transform the reality. Conclusion: the definition of ability has undergone transformations from the development of pedagogical and psychological research, the trends that characterize its theoretical evolution; along with the study that contributes to the improvement of skills in the training of ophthalmology.
