Prediabetes and diabetes mellitus in admitted overweight women

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Obesity is a global health problem associated with the increase of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus. The frequency of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus is unknown in women treated for excess body weight. Objective: To determine the frequency of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus in women treated with excess body weight. Materials and methods: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study with 455 patients treated at the Endocrinology Service of Dr. Salvador Allende Hospital, from January 2013 to December 2015. Variables used: age, weight, height, body mass index, perimeter Waist, fasting blood glucose and 2 hours of the Glucose Tolerance Test. We determined: mean, maximum, minimum, standard deviation and Chi-square test. Results: The majority of the patients had obesity grade I and II (66.4%), and waist circumference (95.6%), the mean age was 36 years, body mass index 35.2 kg / m2 , Waist circumference 103.9 cm, fasting glycemia at 5.1 mmol / L and glycemia of 2 hours at 6.2 mmol / L. 27.3% were classified as prediabetic or diabetic, associated with increased age. The majority of pre-diabetic patients had impaired fasting glycemia. Conclusions: Obesity predominates in women who are being consulted for excess body weight and the frequency of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus is high.REFERENCES
