ABSTRACT
Systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SRD) are characterized by chronical joints inflammation and other tissues of the body. In recent years there has been a great progress in characterizing the genetic bases that predispose to develop this group of diseases. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as molecular biomarkers for the diagnosis, prognosis and prediction of therapeutic response in different pathologies. The miRNAs are small molecules of a single strand of non-coding RNA of 21-23 nucleotides that are expressed endogenously in multicellular organisms and whose known function is the control of gene expression, mainly by repression at the post-transcriptional level. Each miRNA is estimated to regulate up to two hundred genes. The purpose of this article pretends to provide an update of the information on the importance and utility of miRNAs as molecular biomarkers in the diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic response in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PA).
