ABSTRACT
Syndromic craniosynostosis represents a spectrum of congenital pathologies that have a negative impact on patients’ lives. The term craniosynostosis refers to the premature fusion of a cranial suture; this problem generates aesthetic and functional deficiencies in the skull of patients. The main functional problems are: increased intracranial pressure, visual disturbances (due to compression of the optic nerve) and respiratory disorders such as sleep apnea (due to retrusion of the middle third). Correction of synostosis should be carried out as soon as possible to reduce the risk of complications secondary to these functional problems such as psychomotor retardation, blindness and cranial malformation. We concluded that within the initial treatment options for patients with syndromic or complex craniosynostosis, the expansion of the posterior cranial fossa can now be considered the procedure of choice since it can be performed at early ages with little morbidity and mortality creating a decrease in intracranial pressure and an aesthetic improvement in the shape of the skull. Patients may undergo subsequent anterior vault expansion procedures without any consequences.
