ABSTRACT
Introduction: safety culture strengthening makes it possible to exercise and ensure the knowledge required to facilitate the appropriate performance of processes aimed at protecting individual, collective and environmental health. Objective: conduct an educational intervention geared to strengthening safety culture, with the purpose of minimizing risks which may negatively affect the population and the environment. Methods: the study was conducted from January to July 2015. A random selection was made from among the 61 professional and non-professional workers engaged in microbiological diagnosis in southern Mayabeque. The sample was composed of 26 professionals and 12 auxiliaries. The level of knowledge of participants was evaluated before and after the intervention by means of an experimental method based on interviews and observation. The study was designed into three stages. Results: a significant difference was found between initial and final level of knowledge in both groups. The initial score was fair for most professionals and poor for all auxiliaries, while the final score was very good for all participants. Conclusions: educational interventions strengthen the safety program in laboratories and foster attitudinal changes ensuring risk prevention in level I and II laboratories. They also pave the way for the development of the standard waste management operational procedure, as well as the contingency plan and emergency procedures.
