ABSTRACT
Introduction: mechanical ventilation is the most common technique into the intensive care unit to support life.
Objective: to describe the behavior of mechanical ventilation in an intensive care unit.
Method: a transversal, prospective and descriptive trial was carried out at the General teaching Ivan Portuondo Hospital´ Intensive care unit in “San Antonio de los Baños”, during three months each year from 2014 to 2016. The sample was 84 patients.
Results: the group of 78 years and more of age and female sex predominated. Community-acquired pneumonia was the main cause of using mechanical ventilation and endotracheal intubation the principal risk factor. Both density and rate of incidence of the mechanical ventilation-associated respiratory infection were high with ventilator-associated pneumonia as the highest. Most of the patient had an inflammatory systemic response syndrome. There was a gram negative predominance being Enterobacter cloacae the most isolated bacteria with adequate sensibility to amikacin. APACHE II score and rate of mortality were higher than national rate. In patients who used invasive mechanical ventilation the mortality rate was higher and with more days of ventilation.
Conclusions: ventilator-associated pneumonia was the principal ventilator-associated respiratory infection produced by gram negative bacteria.
