ABSTRACT
Our experience in the treatment of humeral fractures by means of the use of the centromedular
unreamed humeral nail (UHN) as the best alternative in their treatment is reported. We carried out
a prospective, not experimental, clinical study in the Hospital Juárez de México between March 1st,
1998 and September 1st, 1999. Twenty patients with closed, non complicated, acute fractures of
the humerus were included, 14 male and six female with an average age of 42.5 years old, with the
following fracture lines: four patients with long oblique lines, one with short oblique line, 11 with
transverse lines and three subjects with three-fragment line. All patients were treated with UHN
blocked in 100% of the cases both distal and proximally, with a surgical time between 60 and 90
minutes. Ninety-five percent of patients got bone consolidation between six and 10 months after
surgery. Complications were presented in 25% of the cases: Two patients with fissure or extraction
in the insert point, one patient required manual rimed, one patient had a iatrogenic fracture of the
humeral diaphysis, one patient presented radial nerve lesion. Results obtained after bone
consolidation considering shoulder and elbow functions were: 85% excellent, 10% moderate, and
5% bad results for the shoulder; 75% excellent, 15% moderate and 55% bad results for the elbow.
