ABSTRACT
Platelets are small anucleate cells derived from megakaryocytes in the bone marrow,
play a vital role in the normal hemostatic response to endothelial damage and are
key elements in the stroke and heart attack. Platelets play an important role in the
modulation of innate immune response because they possess rudimentary activity
antibacterial and phagocytic, and in adaptive immune responses. In addition that
contain proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1, in this way modulates the immune
response and inflammatory. In rheumatoid arthritis platelets and platelet-derived
microparticles can accumulate in the joints of rheumatoid arthritis patients, plus
platelets can be essential to the progression of inflammatory arthritis. In systemic
lupus erythematosus, there is an increased platelet reactivity and increased serum
CD40L in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. In systemic sclerosis, platelets
are activated in this disease. This review presents an overview on the role of platelets
in autoinmune diseases.
