ABSTRACT
Tetrahydrofolate (THF) and its derivatives (5-formyl-THF, 10-formyl-THF, 5-methyl-
THF, 5,10-methylene-THF, 5,10-methenyl-THF) are collectively called folates or vitamin
B9. Folate deficiency in plants and other organisms causes severe alterations in their
development. Animals cannot synthesize folates
de novo and plants are the main
source of them. Folates donate or accept carbon units for the synthesis of purines,
thymidilate, methionine, pantothenate and formyl-methionyl-tRNA, and participate in
serine-glycine interconversion and histidine catabolism. Folates, participating in the
synthesis of these metabolites compose a complex network, known as one-carbon
metabolism. These metabolic aspects and the role of folates in plant development
are reviewed in this paper.
