In the last years, the consumption of probiotics (containing viable beneficial microorganisms)
and prebiotics (stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria) is increasingly
recommended to prevent several diseases, as well as to aid in their treatments.
Although the exact mechanisms by which probiotics act are not completely known,
several studies suggest that probiotics are involved in the immune system regulation
through its interaction with the Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT), in fact, one
of the major benefits of probiotics consumption is contention and improvement of
the gut inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. However, the beneficial effects of
probiotics are not limited to the gut, they also modulate the systemic immune response,
improving infectious diseases, asthma and allergies. In this work we made a
review about the consumption of probiotics and its potential benefit at the immune
system level, as well as some of the acting mechanisms revealed up to now.
