ABSTRACT

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a syndrome, which has progressed in the last 20 years. It is characterized by a sudden decrease of the glomerular filtrate and the increase of the nitrogenous products in blood. Oliguria is associated in 2/3 of the cases, depending on the location or cause of the damage. The first observational studies from 1980 and 1990 established the general epidemiological characteristics of acute kidney injury: incidence, prognostic importance and predisposition to medical and surgical conditions. This article aims to review the main guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of AKI, very useful in the perioperative period, which leads to a better understanding of the pathophysiology to provide a timely treatment and, as far as possible, prevention of renal injury. A total of eigth recommendations were reviewed, including risk factors for AKI, detection and diagnosis strategies, nephrotoxic agents, pharmacological strategies for the preventive treatment of AKI and nutritional modalities.
