Yellow fever: a condition with the potential for resurfacing in Mexico

ABSTRACT

Yellow fever is a viral disease belonging to the Flaviviridae family, and the genus Flavivirus. It is an important cause of hemorrhagic disease in several countries of Africa and North of South America, in these regions arrives to be an endemic disease. It is transmitted by the bite of the mosquito Aedes aegypti and other mosquitoes of the genera Aedes, Haemagogus and Sabethes. The incubation period is between 3 and 7 days. The duration of illness in case of cure is one to two weeks. After the incubation period, two clinical forms can be distinguished: mild and severe; The mild form begins with high fever, chills, headache, myalgias and nausea, usually lasts from 1 to 3 days and heals without complications. In the severe form are present the previous symptoms and present epistaxis, gingivorrhagia, hematemesis, melena there is presence of jaundice, can evolve to hepatic or renal insufficiency. The treatment is symptomatic, there is a vaccine for this condition.
