Current situation of risk factors for taeniosis / cysticercosis complex in Mexico

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Currently in Mexico cysticercosis remains a human
health problem. The determination of geographical areas in which
the conditions for completion of the life cycle of Taenia solium remain
a priority in order to be able to apply the appropriate preventive
measures.
Objective: To determine, at the states and municipal levels, the
areas in which the main risk factors necessary for the development of
the Taenia solium life cycle persist through consultation of the latest
available population and agricultural censuses.
Methods: We consulted the Population and Housing census (2010,
INEGI) and the Agricultural Census (2007, INEGI) and evaluated
the distribution, at the state and municipal levels, of the following
four variables: “water, drainage and toilet availabilities”, as well as
“presence of pigs in housing”. The states and municipalities with the
highest number or proportion of houses meeting these criteria were
selected. We compare our results with the Human Development
Index (HDI, UNDP).
Results: We present the distribution of the 10 States and of the
100 municipalities that gather the most risk factors. The correlation
between HDI and risk factors was highly significant when all
municipalities were taken into account, but not significant when only
the 100 municipalities with the highest risk factors were considered.
Conclusions: Herein we present an original methodology that
allows locating the zones of the country that present more risk
factors for the development of the complex taeniosis / cysticercosis.
This methodology will allow the targeted application of prevention
strategies in the most affected areas.
