ABSTRACT
Background: migraine is a frequent chronic disease and a very important worldwide cause of disability. Data about prevalence of migraine in Cuba are scarce.
Aim: to determine the prevalence and the clinical epidemiological characteristics of migraine in Bayamo municipality.
Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted in the general population of Bayamo municipality. The second International Headache Society classification was used. Sample size, which was calculated by means of the program Epidat, was 3000 adults over 18 years of age, who were selected by simple random sampling.
Results: the prevalence of migraine was 16, 8 % (women 25, 8 % and men 7, 9 %). Age at migraine onset was 20, 57±9, 31 years and disease duration 21, 91 ± 14, 69 years. Mean headaches days were 19, 30 ± 9, 71 and mean headache severity was 6, 80 ± 1, 91; 60, 8 % of patients were between 18 and 45 years old; 60, 2 % had some stable relationship. 40, 2 % had coexistent headaches and 37, 2 % abused medication. Anxiety (45, 1 %), depression (41, 1 %) and bad sleep quality were frequent; 29, 9 % of patients had moderate to severe disability.
Conclusions: migraine prevalence is high in the population under study; there is a high rate of anxiety, depression, bad sleep quality, coexistent headaches and medication abuse. Little to mild disability prevailed.
